Affiliate Programs and Your Business
One of the more interesting things about having a website is that you can do something with it that you can’t do with other advertising: You can use your site to make money, and with limited maintenance.
Affiliate programs allow you make money from your site, and help make it attractive to search engines. The way it works it works is rather simple: You sign up, and place some code on your site that puts a button on your site. Whenever someone clicks on the button, you get paid. The more often someone clicks on the button, the more often you get paid.
Most often, the affiliate programs place an ad on your site (making you the affiliate), and you have limited control over whatever ad actually shows up on your site. However, some programs give you control over what ads show up, as well as some options over how you get paid and when. There are a number of decent affiliate programs out there; it’s just a matter of finding one that works well for you.
Some affiliate programs are good for helping with search engine optimization. Some drive traffic to your site directly, while others give you access to a discussion board where you can create your own business. Better yet, some show you how to make more money, just from advertising your site.
Of course, you can also take advantage of affiliate marketing yourself, as some allow even small businesses to take advantage of their advertising services. Although they can be expensive for full service, not every site needs the full treatment; just being able to sell advertising on sites that are related is worth the cost, especially when you realize the scope of the various affiliate program.
If you are interested in affiliate advertising, there are two statistics that you need to be aware of: per click (PPC), and per impression (PPM). You pay or are paid based on a specific number of clicks or impressions, usually per thousand of either (it’s for that reason that “pay per impression” is abbreviated as “PPM”, with “M” being the Roman number for “thousand”). Per impression is the better pay, as a visitor needs to just look at the ad; at the same time, for the same reason, it is more expensive. Pay per click is cheaper for the advertiser, but is thus also less pay for the affiliate. Either way, the amount you get paid is determined by how many visitors your site gets.
Affiliate advertising can be a very lucrative opportunity for the right site. Keep in mind that it works great if you are advertising your site through other means; it can be used to pay for the site itself, and maybe even make a profit. However, keep in mind that you need to look at the affiliate program seriously; there is a possibility that you could be selling goods that you would prefer to not deal. Consider it just like you would any other potential business partner, and you should do well.
Great post! If you have a website that is high on traffic and high in Google you could potentially create loads of passive income. Affiliate sales online can be a good way to pay for your web hosting, however, good SEO will pay off for all of these methods.
