In affiliate marketing, a two tier program is a way in which a merchant can generate more income for his business. In a two tier program, the merchant has an agreement with an affiliate, which is mainly what affiliate marketing is. However those affiliates are allowed to bring on board additional affiliates, which are the second affiliate tier. So the second tier affiliates also promote a product, but when they earn a commission the first tier also earns the commission.

Generally affiliate marketing can be a multi-tier business; however the most common cases are one and two tiers. When affiliates sign into an affiliate program, they are allowed to bring other people into the program, working in a level below them. Those people can also bring more people into the program, so every commission a lower level tier receives will also be given to the higher level tier. The problem with a multi-tier affiliate program is that there are so many options of programs for affiliates that a lower tier affiliate ends up joining one where he doesn’t have to pay commission to the higher tier. However two-tier programs do work especially when the lower lever tier is a beginner looking to learn the trade. As an affiliate if you want to use a two-tier system, first you need a stable and reliable merchant. If the merchant provides a good stream of income and it will really pay off to get more business from them you can choose to run more affiliates. Therefore it is absolutely vital that you are in a high ranking affiliate program, which can generate much income if tapped correctly. Once you have this kind of relationship you can try to bring another affiliate in a tier below you. You can even start an affiliate program of your own but you have to decide how many tiers you want it to have.

There are several advantages in having multiple tiers, for example, all the commissions your lower tier will be receiving from his work, will also mean more income for you. You will get as well a bigger customer base, because basically they are the customers of two affiliates working with the same market segment. This will bring even more benefits, because the customer base the affiliates and sub-affiliates generate will be a base for further ventures. You will have a good customer loyalty and there will be a lot of people working towards the same goal. The benefits of a two-tier scheme can be many, but everything is done successfully if it’s done smartly. Therefore don’t rush into making a decision, but do consider the options you have in terms of multiple tier programs.
